Dandong and the Yalu river in Liaoning province

The Bridge of the Friendship between North-Korea and China

This is the Bridge of the Friendship at Dandong. Dandong is situated in the east of Liaoning district, at the Yalu River, which is the border between China and North-Korea.

In the Korean War the bridge was destroyed by the Americans. But China built a new bridge, and made a monument of the old bridge.

During the Manchukuo era Dandong was the capital of Andong Province, one of the fourteen provinces established by Manchukuo. It adopted its present name on January 20, 1965, to avoid connotation of its previous name which was considered imperialistic by some.

The district Dandong is divided into 3 districts, 2 towns and one autonomous county. Those are Zhenxing District (Zhènxīng Qū), Yuanbao District, Zhen'an District, Fengcheng City, Donggang City and the Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County.

Interesting tourist spots in Dandong include the museum dedicated to the “War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea”, also known as the Korean War and Jinjiang mountain, which is the city’s biggest park.
